What are the requirements for helping out?
The school teaches inexperienced teen drivers the basics of vehicle dynamics, car control and collision avoidance, so a basic understanding of car control techniques is useful. Driving exercises include a figure eight skid pad, emergency lane change and a slalom-like obstacle avoidance course. Throttle steering and skid recovery are basic exercises students will practice, so some experience at these is also helpful.
It's similar to an autocross school, except that speed is not a consideration. How fast the student gets through the exercise is not important. It's their ability to control the car that we're concerned with. Cars travel just fast enough to achieve the desired effects through the exercises.
We'll hold an instructor training session the night before the school, and instructors will have an opportunity to get some practice on the exercises while the students are in the classroom.
Bottom line, if you've been autocrosing for a while, it shouldn't be too difficult to turn you into a Street Survival instructor!

The Esposito Clan will be there too. I don't suggest using my Dad as an instructor though. Let's just say when he tried to teach me how to drive things did not go well. I still have nightmares...

Yeah, I can't wait to see what happens in a few more years when Laurel goes for her license - either the DMV inspector is going to be dazzled by shuffle steering and heel and toe downshifts, or she's gonna get yelled at by a less enlightened and terrified inspector! Maybe I should register the Hotruck again, I'm sure a welded differential and five point harnesses would make quite the impression during a driving test...;)

Matt,
Let me know when this goes down. I would most certainly buy a ticket for this event. :D

Arnie, please count me in for this. It's after Finals so that helps me out a lot and I need something fun to do before I start summer school. :)

For anyone on the fence about coming out and instructing at one of these events my advice is DO IT!!!!!
It's a lot of fun and very rewarding. You'll meet some great kids and better prepare them for some of the risks that come with the responsibility of getting behind the wheel.

Questions:
Are we going to be utilizing our cars or theirs for this event?
Will we be able to take them on a ride in our car to show them how it's supposed to go?
Will we be driving their vehicles?
Thank you :)

I highly doubt we're using our cars, I'm sure we'll use their cars or provided cars.
Also, a lot of kids learn by visuals, so I imagine there are instructor demonstrations- using their vehicles. I know we tended to pick the SUV's/vans for driver demos because they have the softest suspension, so the kids can see how weight shift is connected to vehicle dynamics. How many kids tend to show up?

The kids use their own cars.
No rides in our cars.
We do not drive their vehicles.

Lyssa,
I'd like to add that there is usually time while the kids are in the classroom for you to drive your own car through the exercises if you desire ...or ride with another instructor.

When I'm not having to study for the GRE, working, reading and memorizing a 230 page manual for my internship, and have anything that resembles this "life" I keep hearing about, I would love to help contribute :D
Sure looks like a capable and enthusiastic bunch though!

Hmmm, did I miss it?
We should have more instructors than we need, but there's nothing wrong with that!
Come on up Sunday AM if you like. You're welcomed, as long as you behave . . . :D:D:D
