Tire Rack Street Survival© e-Newsletter Vol. 2 No. 1
May 1st, 2010

Greetings TRSS Heroes!

Program status –
High Center of Gravity Vehicles (SUV, Pick-up Trucks, Mini Vans etc..)
The BMW CCA Foundation as determined the process to filter the high center of gravity vehicles that
would like to participate in the TRSS program. We will direct all individuals to the government database
of crash test and roll over ratings at www.safercar.gov to review their vehicles roll over rating. This
website uses a 1 to 5 star rating for rollover tests, with 5 starts being the highest. Any vehicle tested
that receives a 3 star rating or higher will be allowed to participate. This website lists vehicles tested
starting in the 2005 model year which, depending on the manufacture was the start of the use of
electronic stability control, so older models that do not have this drivers aide will show either with a
lower rating or a ‘not tested’ designation. It will be noted to the participant that if the vehicle is shown
as ‘not tested’ it will not be allowed to participate. This was not an easy decision to make for the
Trustees but we feel that using this database method decreases the ambiguity in this complex
monitoring issue. It still may require some vehicles to be limited in some of the driving exercises
depending on local venue conditions. The host organization will retain the option to make further
restrictions if it feels necessary.
Lower Age Requirements –
The BMW CCA Foundation has received many requests to lower the age for participation to allow 15
year olds with proper permits to attend. Any student with a state issued permit and has held that
permit for half the amount of time required by that state before they may attempt a driver’s test for full
licensure may now participate in the program. The host organization will retain the option to make
further restrictions if it feels necessary.

300th School!!
On June 15th we will host our 300th school! The Motor City Chapter gets the distinction of hosting this
landmark school.

New Logo
The BMW CCA Foundation is unveiling a new logo. This update will be incorporated into the program
immediately
Leo Newland, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the BMW CCA Foundation says, “As a group, the BMW
CCA Foundation has spent a good deal of time and effort developing the Street Survival teen driving
education concept over the last six years. With the help of our title sponsor The Tire Rack, the growth of
the program has now accelerated to include an ever larger number of BMW CCA Chapters, as well as
SCCA Chapters participating in some 90+ schools nationally, impacting more than 2,000 students this
year alone. The new logo for the program is meant to lend a more contemporary look and feel to this
effort. One that both teens as well as their parents can relate to and be comfortable with.”
Don’t throw away any of your current logoed shirts. The cost to replace all of these items is not
possible for us to absorb and we are asking for your patience and assistance in making this transition as
finically painless as possible. We will be using all current stock of items up and slowly begin the new
material into use.

Cool!

Well for us instructors I'd say the most important thing at this point is to hold onto our instructor shirts even though they changed the logo.

Uhhhh, I guess I'd say the most important thing for us instructors is the new guidance on high center of gravity vehicles . . . followed closely by holding on to our instructor shirts, of course . . .
