Don't know if you all saw the mention in last month's Redline about Club Workshop... I went down there today for an "intro to MIG welding" class. I also took the opportunity to spray lacquer a piano bench I had just built, since they have a spray hood with exhaust.
This is an awesome place if you have a project to do but just need a few more tools or a bit more space. Wood shop, metal shop (all welding, all machining including 3-axis CNC), massive auto shop with lift, press, tubing bender, sheet metal working equipment... tons of equipment.
The access/membership rates are IMO quite reasonable, and the instructional classes are downright cheap. Two thumbs up from me.

Thank you for posting this. A friend at work told me about it a few months ago. I completely forgot. I'm so there.
How was the welding class?

How was the welding class?
A good intro covering safety, an explanation of the basics, and a good amount of hands-on time. Ending with an admonishment to "practice, practice, practice". Conveniently, club members can go in and practice all they want! Personally, I'm just interested to work my way up to TIG and hopefully working aluminum.

General Air Service in Denver (right off I-25 at 8th Ave) has a ton of welding classes throughout the year. Saturdays from 8 - Noon, $50.00 a class. They have basic and advanced MIG and TIG regularly, then plasma cutting, oxy/acetylene and stick arc welding much less often. The guy that teaches is an incredible welder (but he...uh...kind of knows it...). The teacher gets kinda cranky if you take the advanced without the basic first, but he got over it with me! The basic class is about 50/50 classroom and welding, the advanced goes maybe 75% with the welders. One cool thing is they have several makes and models of welders to use, so in addition to learning something, you kind of get to test drive the machines. If you have your own auto-darkening helmet, bring it - the loaner helmets are all fixed tint.

Thanks Matt, good to know. I've wanted to learn for years and have just never gotten around to it. Maybe 2010 will be the year.

They also have a very nice Tire mounter. The balancer isn't the greatest, but it works. Mounter is good enough for smark's and my 285's on 10" rims.

Hmmm... I'm going to order some suspension bushings. This seems like it would work well for the light overhaul. Thanks for the info.

I finally went over this morning and joined. Should have done this a long time ago. Cool place and the people seemed cool too. I'm going to go over this afternoon and get the brake cables on the MR- finally.
Man, they have some cool gear. Going to have to take a few classes and mess with some stuff.

I just wanted to bump this thread.
Looking at the date, amazingly, it looks like I've been a member for only about a month. I can't believe what I've done over there in that short period. Brake booster on my wife's 4Runner, blasted and painted a ton of parts for the Capri, learned to use the laser etcher and the metal lathe, fixed the parking brake on the MR2 (finally), mounted and balanced a new set of summer tires and one winter tire for the MR2 - and who knows what else, I'm over there all the time.
This place has been perfect for me. I highly encourage you to check it out if you have any need of such a place. Really, this has revived my Capri project and it may actually get done this summer now. No, like really. And the MR2 is in better shape than it's ever been in. I'm completely hooked and I haven't even taken a welding class yet. There's going to be no stopping me after a few more classes.
CNC Router for building speakers, MIG and TIG for car work - there are even sewing machines. I might do the upholstry for the Capri myself now. Who knows!
Just a reminder on a nice Spring day. I know a lot of guys here have everything they need to do these things, but for the rest of us, get over there and get those projects done!
Take care,
Ed
