View Full Version : A Street Tire Class

I thought I looked through the SCCA rules pretty good but I can't find anything about the "A-Street Tire" class, under which some folks raced on 9/20 at Dick's. Since I was racing (if you can call it that) on street tires myself, my terrible 49.243 (47.243 and 1 cone) would have at least been indexed to a poor 42.243 or something, right? I am just curious because I expect to race a few more times until those tires are worn down to a nub, before I buy some R-compound tires. So, for the December 13 race, should I (can I) register my E-stock 1978 280Z in the A-street tire category? Or should I just jack up the air pressure, toughen up, and learn to drive ;-)

Hi Bill,
I'll try to answer this, but others will chime in. A Street tire I believe is a local class. It's for stock legal cars running on street rubber. So yes, you can run it, but you're still racing on your E Stock index. In other words, you wouldn't have gotten any more points, but you are competing in an index class with other people on street tires. So if you're going to stick to street rubber it's a fun way to compete. But if you're thinking about running R compound tires down the road, you might think about sticking with us E Stock guys. Besides, I like your car and would like to see it again!
You can find more info on A Street tire in the supplemental rules to the left. And let me look... Ah, yes.

Ed pretty much covered it, but I'll add in that I understand what you're looking at. You see the indexed times listed next to the driver's actual times in the full results whereas the other classes do not have this indexed time next to them. This is because AT is an 'indexed' class and they want to show how close the competitors in the class were to each other. To find your indexed time, simply click on 'indexed results' for the 20th (event 12) and scroll down until you find yourself. You'll see what your time got indexed to and it would not have been any different than if you ran in AT. AT is simply for competition's sake!

Ah, I see what he was asking. So your "index time" for the last event was 40.527. Quite a bit better than your 49.243! But running in AT wouldn't change the index time.
Take care,
Ed

OK, thanks for the clarification. I plan on autocrossing the street tires until they're slicks ;-) just kidding, but I want to do a few more races on them to learn the car more and then go with the R-compound tires so I can be amazed. And I plan on doing couple of years of autocross, then trying some circuit racing at HPR (I'm trying it the 30th with the Z Car Club of CO).
For the tires, is there any place locally that people feel is a good deal on something like BFG g-force, Hoosiers, Toyo Proxes, or Kuhmo Ecsta or Victoracer V700 or V710, which I see people consider good for autocross and occasional track time.

You sure you don't want to come and play STR?
Hey Bill. I am assuming your stock wheels/tires are 14"? If so, you could go up to the Tire Source in Boulder and ask Pete about the 14" Ecsta V700's (or they may be Victoracers) he has on his shelves. Either way, they've been there for a while so he probably would be willing to deal to get them off his hands.
