Thinking about buying an E36 M3. Is there a better inexpensive, STU-legal tire than the Kumho MXs? Or, a significantly better tire for not significantly more?

Thank you very significantly.

I think the hot STU tire is the Advan Neovas. They are way more expensive than the Kumhos.

I'm sure there are other tires that people will bring up. STIs come stock with RE040s or something, right? Whatever they are, people have been running on those.

Looking at some of the results from the NT and Pros looks to be Yokos and Falken 615's seem to be the hot tire in STU right now.

Falken 615 or Advan Neova is the way to go. Since the E36 is not AWD then you can run a max 275 if you can stuff it under there but realistically you're looking at a 255/50. Personally, I'm running a 235/45 Advan A-046. It's softer and a little stiffer sidewall then any of the others.

Thanks for all the input.

The Falken RT615 is preferable to the MXs primarily because of the stiffer sidewall perhaps? Or does the compound also work better, esp. for a heavier vehicle?

Are the Yoko Advan A032R legal for STU? I'm guessing no; the treadwear rating is only 60.

For E36 M3s, the hot tire in STU I saw at the national level last year was 255 width Kumhos and Falkens. They run taller than stock.

Check with Jason Patel; I believe that he's running the popular configuration.

I think the car to have would be the EVO VIII RS in STU and if it gets wet..watch out for them to put down those E36 M3's.

I believe Jason is trying to run down his MX's that he's running from last year.

255/40-17 up front? Wow. I don't think that will fit very well on the OEM 17" x 7.5" wheel. I wasn't planning on being ultra competitive/serious in STU, just wanted to be educated on what would be preferable before buying tires.

Kumho MX + Concrete + 3100 lb. vehicle = prepare to get whooped by the competition. They were just way to squishy, almost numb feeling.

Wheels are unrestricted in STU so if you go that route, you may need to get something to accomodate a wider tire.

I am running the 615's now and I like them better than the stock potenza's. The STi's come stock with RE070's for those wondering.

And I think the car to have in STU is the STi :D . M3 is good if you have the time to set it up. Evo's are very strong too.

The 255s would have to run on a 17x8.5 (my new track configuration).

Remember that the car you're looking at is staggered 7.5 front and 8.5 rear. I think the default tire width is 225F and 245R.

How about a 17" x 8" all the way around for the 255/40-17? I may decide to use the e58 330i Sport OEM copy wheels for autox/summer driving . . .

Hmmmm. 8" might be pushing it for a 255 width tire. The 8.5s are barely enough for the 255 RA-1s.

If you go with the 17x8s, I think I'd do 245/35-or-40/17.

And yes--absolutely--go the same wheel and tire around if you're buying new.

I think the E36 stagger was to prevent non-drivers from putting their M3s into unwanted rotation :-)

Pssst: I'll be selling the 17x8 SSR Comps that I got from Mr Pickles when I bought the car.

I have some clear front corners that I'll give you, to help lessen the sting.

Then we need to talk upgrades :D

I currently have 235/40/17's mounted on 17x8's and they fit very well. As David says, the 255's are probably too wide for 8 inch wheels.

8.5 inch wheels are pretty common for the E36, so they should be easy to acquire (but not necessarily cheap).

I agree about the kumho MXs. I'm trying to kill a set of 245/40s on my Talon. They aren't the best. You don't need to spray them, which is really nice, but I'd try to stretch my budget a little bit and get some falkens. The stiffer sidewalls are nice.
