View Full Version : Interesting find on the vette

I figured I would enter the new year by dis-assembling the vette for some maintenance and slight upgrades. Captain Unfug himself (Jake Latham) came over to have a fun filled day of gear head tasks on the car. After some inspection of the car this is what was found:

1) Front Left shock had a broken line to the res. Which i think happened at the last PPIR event. :eek:
2) Front Right shock was blown (not sure how long ago this happened) :eek:
3) Front Right brake line was leaking (This also happened at last PPIR event)
4) Two missing header mounting bolts underneath the car :confused:
5) Scorched wire connection the oil pressure sensor to the block, they looked like the header melted them (or the fire). O2 sensors VERY close to header and looked slightly cooked :(

These are minor, thankfully..but may or may not have effect performance. Needless to say the vette is on jack-stands in the garage.

I have ya' beat, oh dill and preserved one. You'd cringe at the sight of my Opel's chassis wiring harness. This thing's gonna' take a lot of work to get back into shape, and I'm still not quite sure what shape that'll be.

Thankfully, Mr. Jobusch has offered to continue my codrive arrangements in his M. FSP '07 perhaps? Eh... perhaps...

Interesting - I used to know a guy who ran an Opel Manta locally in DSP back in the day. Is yours a Manta?

Nope. '72 GT. I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to race prep it. Since there's no V Stock, I figure FSP is where it'd need to be in order to be at all competitive. I've been reading (skimming) the SP rules, and still haven't figured out what I can and cannot do.

The '72 came with a 7.62:1 carbureted 1.9l I4. Previous model years had a 9.0:1 compression ratio, but otherwise identical (carb jetting different, I'm assuming). I think I can still backdate that part, yes? Looks like fuel delivery is open, so I can swap in a fuel injection system of some sort. And that's about it for making any sort of power. I might be able to squeeze 120hp at sea level from that setup. The rest is suspension work, and there's a LOT of work to be done there...

But it sure is purdy...

Missing bolts? And molten wiring? And toasted sensors?

While the new engine impresses, the installation continues to, er, not impress.

Glad you and the Cap'n found these issues before Bad Things happened.

I am starting to agree, but there isn't much I can do unfortunately.

Ahh molten wiring. One of the reasons I'm currently replacing every wire and gauge in my Tiger. Good ol Lucas wiring with a grand total of 2 fuses for the whole car.

I guess they relied on the wires to act as a fuse when things went bad :eek:

OK, you *are* the most patient person I know.
You acted almost offended the few times that I mentioned that I thought the "installers" were yahoos.
Maybe you were just bummed to have spent money on yahoos?

I spent a few seasons running an EP Opel GT in California. One guy owned two cars - the Gopel (EP car) and the Slopel (whatever Stock). A few tidbits - there's a reason why the Weber DGV carbs directly replace the stock Solex, and don't plan on putting the stock front transverse leaf spring back in. It's entertaining enough to get out (I'm told- I missed that day...), but once it's out, it looks more like an elliptical leaf spring than a semi-elliptical leaf spring. Good luck, it's a fun car when sorted. And if the 1100 Opel GT and the 1900 are listed on the same line, you really want to find an 1100 rear end - waaaaaay lower gearing. Oh, and for the 120hp at sea level -welcome to my world!
