I was suprised to see the difference in width between two tires both of which are listed at 225 widths. The Kumho 710's are 50 series and the Avon's are 45 series. Ahh the pic didn't turn out as well as i had hoped. The 710's are probably an inch wider.

The Avon tire fits much better on my skinny wheel.

Interesting. At least I now have more ammunition for arguing a swap to the Kumho's with the CFO :D

I ran Hoosier 275-35-18's on my car and then switched to Kumho 245-35-18. The Kumhos were the same width as the Hoosiers. I originally thought that if I was able to run the 275 Hoosiers, that I would be able to run 285 Kumhos considering there was so little difference and at the time there weren't any other sizes available. But when I got the Kumhos, they were 1.5 inches wider than the Hoosiers and I ended up paying to ship them back and get the 245's. It looks like Kumho gives you much more tire for a lower price than Hoosier IMO.

I now understand how the people were getting so much grip from their 205 Kumho 710's...they were probably just as wide as my Hoosier 225's a couple of years back. Good point about Kumho giving you more tire for the $.. Now I should actually measure the tires to see which manufactures can actually measure correctly.

Well, considering the English use the metric system (except for highway distance  ), I'd hope the Avon's were correct:D

Curious.
I was told by Tire Rack last year, when I first ran the 710s, that in terms of width:
S03 > S04 > 710s
Their claim was that the S03's were almost an inch wider than the 710s in a 245 size.

You really need to look at the spec sheets for the tire. An Avon TechRA in 225/45-15 has a tread width of 8.5". A V710 in 225/50/15 is 9".
Technically a 225 should be 225/25.4 = 8.9" Go figure.

Actually the first number is the section width and not the tread width.

Oh all right. Seems like they would have defined it as the tread width since the section width will vary so much with wheel width. My bad.
