View Full Version : TT rules questions

I've got a rally car with a FIA certified roll cage that I'm thinking of bringing out to an event or two this summer. Since the car was built for rally, I'm trying to figure out if its going to be ok to use on the track.

From what I've heard, the door bars in the cage may cause the most problems. Rally cages (at least the FIA approved ones) use an X with gusetts, and I think proper road race cars require ladder bars or something similar. Since I can't modify my cage or it looses its FIA certification, am I going to be OK, since TT isn't true 'wheel to wheel' racing?

Second question (and I've searched the rule book) is regarding composite doors. For PPIHC (our big event every year), I'm looking at getting fiberglass doors to try and shed some weight from the car. I couldn't 'search my way' to find anything in the rule book regarding legality. The doors I'm looking at are for the rears, and instead of having provisions for windows, they are simply fiberglass...i.e. the door was molded with a window in place, so there's no provision for installing windows. Just wondering if these are ok?

Thanks!

Dave -

Can't imagine you'll have a problem getting to run. Drop a line to Grant (gbarclay at aol dot com), the TT steward, and explain your situation. There is a fair degree of case-by-case-basis analysis for getting the "yay" or "nay" on TT legality. Seriously doubt Grant or Josh/Dan/Mark/etc would have a problem with your cage.

Dave, if the FIA says the cage is good for rally, I will gladly accept it in Club time trials. Due to the level of car prep, I would like you to wear your racing suit, when on the track. The safety gear you wear for the peak, or CHCA events is fine for time trials

If you decide to go door to door road racing, you may have to choose a class that does not require the NASCAR style bars

F/glass doors, no problem.

I will create a rally car class just for you. We have had rally cars run with us in the past.

Thanks Grant! Turns out after getting excited about shedding some major weight off the car, the budget for the build just got neutered. :(

No issues wearing all the safety gear, that's what I bought it for.

I'll see if I can get a few more folks from the rally group interested in coming out...but I'm also fine getting tossed in with the regular cars, as long as there's some mod level where I'd fit in.

Oh wow, sounds like a great car, I can't wait to check it out.

I'm trying to get my car ready by then as well. I just blew a turbo on the daily driver this evening in the cold, so my budget just shrunk. :p

Well, after looking at the new rules for this year for E-mod, I'm honestly not sure what class I -do- fit in anymore. It seems they now require a fuel cell for modified classes? Plus, I really don't want to remove the wing to run in E-mod, especially at HPR. I don't know where I fall into anymore other than 'that other racing group' that has the unlimited category? Thoughts fellas?

Super Touring? Wings OK. No fuel cell provided the OEM tank meets certain requirements. Touring cages. Engine swaps within corporate badge (The Street Mod of Club Racing).

That's what I need some clarification on. I do fit into ITE, tell me more about super touring please. As of right now, looking at the new rules, i'm shy one fuel cell. (the wing I used to take off for E-mod, but would prefer not to)

Thank you sire!

It's section 9.1.4 in the GCR. They changed B & D Prepared to ST-O & ST-U.

Erron -

Per my e-mail to you, just send a note to Grant. They'll find a place for you to run as-is if you want to do TT.

Or, perhaps I should ask him to kick you out of TT so you go run ITE and catch the club racing bug :D

Perhaps I miss understood the question. Are you wondering where you fit in Club Racing or TT?
In TT there really isn't a class structure. We follow the SOLO classing to determine what safety gear is required. From the Stock classes up to SP it's just your basic SOLO safety requirements: Helmet, gloves, neck to ankle cotton, OEM belt OK. The only additional requirement is arm restraints (or window nets) and that's for ALL TT cars regardless of "class".
Once you get into Street Mod and above, full race safety gear is required (Fire suit, gloves, undies, cage, cell...). SM is the grey area. My car for instance is in SM due to an engine swap. If you were to ignore the chassis it's in, it would be in D Stock if it had stock suspension or DSP as-built. So I run as OSP at TT's. But there are SM cars that are MONSTERS and they would require full race safety gear. It all comes down to the performance capabilities of the car.

Like Jake said, contact Grant, Josh and/or Mark Baer and tell them about your car and it's mods and they will let you know what will be required.

As far as wings and stuff, as long as it safe (not going to fly off) no one cares. Come out and lap with us. It's all about you going faster than... YOU! :D
