If I'm understanding things correctly, the nice folks at Haynes and Chilton aren't yet making a repair manual for any recent Impreza. The reason I guess would be they don't want to put out a manual now, only to have to republish it for the newer models of the same basic body style. Is that right?

If it is right, do I have any other options? I like to futz around a bit with my cars (I've trimmed my stable down to 2 now, be proud of me), but I'm pretty clueless unless I have a manual in front of me. I could probably figure out how to change the oil, but anything beyond that I need pictures and small words.

Anything I can do? I know I could probably get official Subaru shop manuals on CD. I bought one for my Mustang a while back, and found it to be pretty unhelpful for someone at my level.

Thanks!
Gary

First, welcome to the club! Bugeye club, that is!!! :D

I don't know of any offhand. I was going to buy them one at a time (paper versions were something like $30 each, and there were 10), but so far I've only had to purchase the electrical section (installed a car alarm). Depending on what you want to do, http://www.scoobymods.com has a lot of good writeups with pics. I used their writeup to replace my shifter and shift bushings.

Yup... I've also used http://www.scoobymods.com and http://www.nasioc.com to do all the work on my '02... haven't needed a manual yet!!:D

Shop manuals all the way. Chilton or Haynes suck in all aspects. I think they might be an ok source for Torque specs. But other than that, they are useless. Go to Mike Shaw subaru and by yourself some shop manuals. You wont regret it. I think its worth the extra cash to have all the info you need right there when you need it. And I mean all the info. I think they run $30-$45 pending on what you want. It sure beats trying to search for all this stuff on the internet.

Are they now? Back in 02, when I bought mine, they were $30/section. The complete set was 10 or 11 sections ($330 total). I only bought the section I needed at the time.

Yup, $30-$45. Actually, I'll check my invoice right now.............

Thats not going to work. I pay wholesale. I recomend you buy "Mechanism and Function" Along with "Engine". That should be enough to get you started. The General Service manual is ok as well but I feel it falls short sometime. It has lots of torque specs, but so does the "Mechanism and Function" book.

if you search the net, you can find scanned copies. Not that I'd advocate that.

Many parts are the same or very similar with the 04 sti/wrx. That manual might be easier to find.

What are you looking to do anyway?
