View Full Version : thoughts on using old AS303's for track/TT?

I've amassed a small collection of used Hoosier AS303, AS304, and AS305 (autocross compound) tires that are definitely too old and hard to bother running for autocross (at least on the rear of a FWD Honda). Some have lots of tread left, and I was wondering if they'd be suitable for use on the track.

Any thoughts or experiences?

I obviously don't want to create a dangerous situation on the track with other people around at a TT event or lapping day. Do these things come back to life somewhat with continuous heat in them? would they overheat too quickly then?

The short answer is that they overheat very quickly. Better for Solo Trials. But for TT you'll possibly find them getting slippy pretty early in the session.

YMMV...

Brad Huseman has been using S03/4/5 takeoff for use in BMW DEs with decent results. As Josh says, you just have to be prepared for what they will do once they get hot.

He just went through a set of S05 takeoffs this last weekend, but that was three days of driving. Plenty of laps and grins for little $$$

Dave,

Were they autox compound or road race compound?

I am running S05's on the rear of the Mini on the track. Obviously the Mini is very easy on rear tires, and I am guessing I have 150 plus miles on them.

I think the rubber has hardened over the years so while they were soft and overheated originally, they have been just fine for track use.

The front tires are a different story, and I can burn through a set of V710's in a weekend - approx 250 miles. A LSD would ease the tire wear a little.

I'd say run them, but watch the wear on the fronts, you may need to swap F to R between sessions.

Autocross compound. Get your fast laps in early if you care about time. Otherwise, work just fine to go play on.

I just used a set of A3S04s at the MAM track with good success. They ended up cording on the outside shoulders - go figure.

I have also been using a set of Hoosier R6s with very good success at driver schools - with 3/4 days on them so far, they are looking really good.

ASO_,_,_ work great! My favorite to find these days are the A3S03's like a fine wine, they aged well! Surprisingly, these will last you about 5 laps before you notice the turn in and steady state grip start to fall off. No where near as bad as a RT-615 street tire...

Feel free to burn some up. They will be just dandy! :D
