Hi Gang,

I'm really excited about the two autocross schools on the schedule. I notice one is Contentinental Divide region and one is Colorado region. Can anyone go to either or both? I could use all the help I can get!

I'm also curious just kind of how it works if anyone would like to walk through what the day is like, costs, ect. Thanks so much for getting this on the schedule, and thanks to everyone who makes this all happen.

Not sure how this will all work out. The first one is for the weekend after I "should" get my cast off. And the new long block for my MR2 will have to get installed of course.

Take care,

Ed

Ed,

I haven't hammered out the details yet, but I should have things settled within a week to 10 days. Historically, though, it goes like this . . .

The school is tailored to beginner and intermediate drivers (advanced and "expert" drivers will have the Fast Forward school to attend).

Registration for the school is first come first served, regardless of which region you belong to. (We used to give preference to SCCA members, but since everyone now needs to be a member to participate under the new weekend membership program I'm not sure that'll be a discriminator, but maybe "regular members" will have precedence over "weekend" members. Just thinking out loud. I'll need to coordinate that with the powers that be). Preference for the second school will likely go to those who applied but did not make it into the first school.

The day begins with a vehicle tech inspection, followed by a "ground school" where vehicle dynamics and handling, driving techniques and event operation are covered. If you've experienced the RMSolo Autocross School Introduction linked from the home page of the web site, you'll have a good idea of the content. That's followed by coached driving exercises the rest of the day. At the end of the day, the exercises are "blended together to form a mini-course for the students to practice on. Lunch is provided. Haven't settled on a cost yet, but it will be less than $100. You may or may not (depending on what we end up charging) also get a free entry to an RMSolo Summer Series event.

As I said earlier, I'll have the details worked out, and an announcement on the website in about a week. Stand by for news!

Arnie,
What are the criteria for getting into the advanced AX School?

That'll be largely up to the school organizer (Clay Turner organized the last couple of Fast Forward schools) but it's usually based on a minimum average number of points earned by a competitor.

When will registration/ application open? I'd very much like to attend, and don't want to miss out. Is there some place we can start a "camp out" line? :D

If I remember right, last year the one school that was held appeared on the schedule and we (they  ) registered for it just like an event.

I definately want to attend one of these schools. Ed, next time you race, can I hook my kart to your MR2 via a bungie cord and learn how you do this auto-x thing?

At least then, I would stay pointed in the correct direction, unlike my results on Sunday.

I can show you the path to mid pack mediocrity! I hope this season I can get a little better. But before the MR2 gets any of us anywhere I need the new long block to show up and get installed. Cross your fingers for me.

Good news is that I WILL get my cast off the week before the first school!

Take care,

Ed

Okay Judy-

I should probably start a whole separate thread on proper shifter kart autocrossing techniques, especially at World Arena, but here's the short course, assuming a Sunday event:

Tuesday before the event: 1 Ibuprofin every eight hours.
Wednesday: 1 Ibuprofin every six hours.
Thursday and Friday: 2 Ibuprofin every six hours.
Saturday: Review Last Will and Testament, 2 Ibuprofin every four hours. Pad kart seat.
Sunday: 2 Ibuprofin every four hours, half a pack of Tums immediately before first run, stay away from soda. Other half pack of Tums immediately after runs are finished. Check for proper operation of all body parts. Double Vision is perfectly normal for a few hours. Keep up on the Ibuprofin, look for hot tub.

Oh yeah, for the actual driving part: If you're not shifting, you're doing something wrong. If you can focus your eyes on where you're going, you're not going fast enough. If you can still breathe, you haven't hit the lower part of the lot yet. Your facial muscles should be exhausted from grinning by the end of each run. Really, that's what the Ibuprofin build up has been for treating, not the back...

Mind you, I haven't seen the lots at Dick's, but I have to think that nice new asphalt is going to be much nicer in a kart than the cracks, craters, and bumps at World Arena. The big challenge with the kart is just thinking far enough ahead, and you have to think ahead, your eyes don't focus so well when you start out!

Matt Leicester

see reference in one of my other posts - I suck at driving karts!

ROFL!

I was certainly prepared to believe the Ibuprofin was more orthopedically targetted.

This thread raises a different question for me, though. Is there a school at which juniors (i.e., FJB drivers) are appropriate and allowed?

So my friend and I want to attened the school the only thing is we're not sure if his car will be back from the shop by then, seeing its already been there for a month. If we share my car does he still have to pay seperately(good thing to add to that line in the FAQ) and if he puts his car down but doesn't get it back can he just switch to mine. Or get his money back?

Just like co-drivers at a regular event, each entrant pays.

You can bring and drive whatever car you want to the school (as long as it'll pass tech). The question is on the form to help us set the driver groups.

Arnie, thanks for organizing this. I am trying to decide if I should chance it and send in the form. The MR2's new engine is almost ready to drop in. Should be done this week. But I have some more (the last round!) dental work being done the Thursday before the school. I did autocross a few days after my first surgery. I was miserable, but points wise I did pretty well, so I guess it didn't affect me too much. But I might be better off to wait for the second school.

Will people who didn't go to the first school get any priority selection for the second?

Thanks,

Ed

The second RMSolo school this year will be hosted by the Colorado Region, so they'll be setting the rules for that one. The only way I could see a "non-entrant" in the CDR school getting preference for the COR school would be if the CDR school ended up with a waiting list, and you were on it. Not my call, though . . .

Any word on solo discount rates for the hotel by WA?

May I please get confirmation that my registration form was received? I'd like to avoid missing the school because my letter got lost in the mail.

I have not been to the mailbox since the weekend (I'm working in Greeley), so I'll check it tomorrow when I return to the Springs, and update this post.

Before I started typing, I called the Hampton Inn AGAIN to try to get confirmation on a reduced rate, but the manager was on a teleconference, so I left a message. As soon as she gets back to me, I'll post discount info. (and yes, I'll keep trying!)

Finally got hold of the Hampton Inn folks.

They've agreed to a special rate for the school weekend (Friday and Saturday nights) of $79 per nite.

They are awaiting your call to 719-884-0330

11 slots left! Monday is probably your last day to mail in a registration form and expect it to arrive by Wednesday. I have to call in a final head count to the hotel on Wednesday.

We'd really like to fill up the school, so if you're an experienced autoccrosser who didn't sign up because you wanted to save slots for the Novices, go ahead and sign up and get bunches of seat time for very little cost!

You can get a $79 rate at the Hampton Inn next to WA. There another thread with their contact info.

Yeah, but the Days inn is only around the corner (just on the other side of I-25 on Circle Dr) and it was only $50 AFTER tax...;)
