View Full Version : Street Tire Recommendation for Time Trials?

With Kelly asking about R compound tires, I thought I'd ask about "THE" street tire for time trials. There's endless debate about what's best in autocrossing, but what about time trials? Is there a 140+ rating tire that is better than the rest for street touring (S, X, and U) cars that might be interested in time trials? ;) And, is the criteria for choosing a street tire for time trials different than choosing a street tire for autocrossing?

As I mentioned in the other thread, we found that the Falken's tended to go off pretty quickly. And at the track, they got to temp, and over their optimal temp so quickly, that nearly the whole time was "off". They didn't turn to grease, but they definitely lost their best grip. The BFG's on the other hand, tended to be much better suited to the sustained higher temps at the track. Kumho's weren't responsive enough for most people.
This is all testing on STS/X cars. This was data from the 2004/5 TT seasons though, so tires may be different now.

I'm currently running the Hankook Ventus R-S2 and I like them. I haven't done any TT's on them, but I have driven a couple of BMW driving schools (down in Pueblo), and they never felt greasy. They did pick up a lot of other people's rubber, though!
They feel pretty good at auto-x's also. However, this is the first non all-season tire I've run auto-x'ing, so my perception might be a little off... :D

The consensus on the Subaru Forums seems to be the the Kumho MX. It handles repeated laps and high temperatures better that most all of the other 'street' performance tires... YMMV
