I'm really curious as to why UD/BD is only allowed in SP with the entire accompanying engine? Would this qualify as an engine swap, which would put you right into SM?? The fact that same model cars of different years are competing against each other with disadvantages is just wrong.

Welcome to the world of motorsport rules. The answer is, usually, because that's the way the rules are currently written.

Huh? People UD/BD all the time with engine swaps in SP, and are not moved to SM.

My completely non-rule-related understanding is that you can update/backdate engines that were an option/trim package for the specific vehicle in SP. If you put an engine in that wasn't an option, but from the same manufacturer, that would put you in SM.
There's also a rule in there about US availability of the option. Even though my civic could be optioned with a b16 in Japan, it wasn't an option here and therefore not a legal update/backdate for me if I were in SP.

The SP rule for update/bacdate applies to any engine on the line listing in the SP appendix. That does not count as an engine swap. For example, 88-91 Civics appear on one line entry of the SP appendix. This means an 88 Civic can use the motor from a 91. But it must be the whole motor. You can't exchange heads and cams and such...

Update/Backdate also covers transmissions and differentials as well. You can't change the gearing in the differential, unless it was offered over the life span of your vehicles model.
