View Full Version : Wheel tightening question

I use open ended wheel nuts on my car. When fully tightened on the wheel, the tread on the bolts' end comes through about 10mm. I've just picked up a set of wheels that are thicker and with the lug nuts tightened the bolts' end is flush with the opening on the nut. Question is, would it be safe to run like this? I don't wanna end up like that red RX guy :)
Here's a shot from my cell phone cam:

I believe most say 7 full turns is the minimum to ensure safety.
You can always buy longer studs (have fun on the install though!)

Correct... 6-7 full turns of the lugs is the required minimum for engagement. If you are at less then that, you really need to get longer studs.

If both the studs and the nuts are threaded all the way to the ends, I think you're fine. Stud extending past the nut does not help in any way, but if the threads don't go all the way to the ends of the studs and the threads are not the full length of the nut, errmmmmm, start counting turns.

7 full turns is the rule of thumb I've known as well. I've also heard that if the engaged thread portion is equal to or greater than the diameter of the stud, you're fine. I've had street wheels which only had 5.5 or so turns, no issues there.

Dunno. They *look* ok to me, but it really depends on where the threads start and end on the studs and in the nuts.

I've talked to a guy from Discount Tire today and he mentioned 8 turns. Anywhoo, I only get about 8, 8-1/2 turns. The lug nuts seat properly on the wheel, but I'm kinda worried about the end not coming out all the way through (about 1/4 of the last tread). What about the strain on the wheel stud. Will it get weaker with the nut sitting further out or am I just overly worried? :p I might just try running it like this, but just to give you all heads up... get your cameras ready :D :D

Kubo, I think you're cool with 8 turns. I've been running for 2 years now with 7-8 turns and no problems. Wouldn't lead a fellow Shocker team member wrong...

You're way overly worried. Any stud sticking out of the nut isn't doing anything but collecting dirt and adding weight, and the 1/4 thread that isn't engaged isn't going to do a thing. Think of it the other way, do you think that engaging 1/4 of one thread would have any grip strength at all? Relax. Have fun. Torque the wheels properly...

I know, I usually tend to be that way :o I just like to double check. How's that saying? Cut twice, measure once? Or is it the other way?
Thanks guys
