I have never done a race before, and im trying to figure out what class i would be in. the modifications that seem to affect my class is a custom header (with 02 sensor), and no cats straight back to mufflers. i was wondering what kind of noise restrictions and emissions restrictions there are. i also have the airpump removed. the car is a rx-7 so the rotary engine is really loud when its opened up. other mods are KYB agx shocks and a coilover kit, short throw shift kit, smaller steering wheel,K&N filter. i think those are the only mods i have that will affect what class. ive read through the rules but im still not clear. thanks to all that reply.:D

I'm thinking the key mod here is the removed emissions. You're probably looking at SM2 or maybe a SP class but I'm not sure if that's legal in SP. If it is, then it depends which model RX-7 you have. You can be ASP, BSP, or CSP depending on what year yours is.

Maybe one of the Mauro's could chime in.

I like this link I found on the internet....

As far as noise, right now the only noise restricted site we have is World Arena. I'd expect an RX7 without cats would be to loud for that site, but with good mufflers who knows. The rules allow 93 dbA from 50 feet, if you have a way of measuring it.

This will help with placing your car in the proper class. I believe your mods might push you into SM and not SM2 due to it having 4 seats (yes those small seats in the back do count :) ) This is due to the coilover's that push you into Street Mod.

If coilover's are allowed in SP then you could run in the class that fits your car's year and turbo/non-turbo version.

But I would have to read up a little more on SP/SM rules.

The car is SP legal. Emissions crap can be removed. Coilovers can be added. If it's a 1st or second gen, non turbo RX-7, you will want to be in CSP. If it's a second gen turbo-BSP. If it's a third gen turbo, ASP. I would try to stay out of SM2 unles the car is really really really fast. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

I know this isn't like the car classing bible or anything but I said SM2 because of this....

Either way, I'd look into whichever SP class you could belong to.

As an SM2 guy I want to disagree with the above. If the car is really really really fast, stay out of SM2:D

Just kidding. You can come play with us if you want to. I first got into SM2 by accident, but really enjoy the group of drivers we get on a regular basis. The SP guys are pretty nice too however. During the winter season no one is likely to protest you no matter what class you sign up for. Pick one of the classes, and then ask around in both classes at the next event, someone will point you in the right direction.

It is a 2nd gen non turbo.

Coilovers are OK if the car originally came with coilovers. However, you can't convert something like a strut and spring suspension to coiloivers ... the location of the spring mounting perches must remain in the same location.

Eric, I didn't see those rear seats in his list of mods on the RX-7; were those a dealer-installed option? :)

The 1978 and 1979 models offered a rear seat and with not knowing if he had one then SM2 also came to mind. Also in the mid-80's they had the optional "rear-seat" for the RX-7. So I wasn't totally wrong and I'm not sure if they were dealer installed or factory.

Last year I raced with SCCA Club racing. The sound limit (per GCR 12.1) for club racing is 103db. That's 10db more than SOLO. My car always passed with no problem, and that's an 84 RX7, Spec 7 prepared, stock header and straight pipes, no cat and no muffler.

Maybe that gives you something to relate to.

93 db is really loud!
