We are about a month away from the Denver Soap Box Derby and it is time to start getting people signed up to work. There are two sessions, practice is on Saturday June 2nd and the actual race on Sunday, June 3rd. We are providing the public address system, timing equipment, people to set up and run the two systems and a few cones as needed. In addition we will have a booth to display a car or two and provide membership and event information. We need a minimum of 8 people each day, a dozen would be better. I will try to get members from the other disciplines (racing, rallycross and trials) to also participate. No experience is necessary and it is a good way to work with the timing system. I don't have the exact times for the two days yet but we will probably need a few people to set up in the early morning, around 7:00, the practice and race will take place around 10am to 2pm followed by clean up.
Please reply to this post if you are available to work the event either (or both!) day.
Thanks!

The soap box derby sounds like something I would like to help out with, though my grad school research will have me travelling a lot this summer so I can't commit until I know the schedule of when I will be in town. So I can't really sign up at this point, but may at some point in the future.

Folks,
I'm a bit concerned with the lack of response to my plea for workers for this event. Is there a scheduling problem or another problem? If we can get 150 people out for a Solo, I would think we could come up with a dozen or so people for each of the two days. If we had enough volunteers we could even have people only work half-days. There were no objections, only encouragement, when I posted months ago asking if we could support this event. Can anyone fit some time in to help out one of these two days?

I'm afraid my clan will be in California that weekend. Otherwise, it indeed sounds like fun!

I'm in for at least one day. Let me know if you're particularly light on help for one of the days, and I'll make my life work around that for the weekend.

Sorry, Tom. Unfortunately (for you and Soap Box Derby) I will be in Italy that week. I hope you know I'd be there otherwise. Have you tapped the COR road racers for support through Karl McColl???

Randy, I'm going to help on Saturday. I could pick you up in
Wellington in the p-car. Might even breakout the garage queen:D
You know you've always wanted to ride in a 951,
and I'm guessing I get better mpg (27) than the truck.

Tom, I'm willing, but I may be out of town, so I'm not able to commit at this point in time.

They will be there, covering the membership and display tent mainly.

Thanks to the volunteers and the hopefuls. I really hope a few more people will think about this and volunteer soon. I am definitely going to need some instruction or help on setting up and running the timing. :o

We won't be using the computer, just two timers so it isn't rocket science.

I just got the event schedule. Here is what it looks like:
Saturday, June 2
Set-up: 7:00-10:00 am
Inspection\practice runs: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Sunday, June 3
Set-up 7:00 am to 8:00 am
Racing 8:30 to 12:00
Lunch 12:00 to 12:30
Final heats 12:30 to 2:00 (approx.)
Clean up 3:00 to 5:00
Saturday will be as much a practice and set-up for us as it will be for the competitors. It will be low pressure, not every run needs to be timed since it is practice. We can work out the details of how Sunday will work even if we will have a different crew on Sunday.
Sunday will require us to have our stuff together since there won't be much time for set-up. Once we get over that hump we should be good for the rest of the day. Not everything will need to be torn down the night between the two event days but I'm not sure how much we will be able to leave outside.
I figure we will need the most help early Sunday morning. If a few people can volunteer for a 7:00 to 10:00 shift on Sunday to help get us up and running that would be awesome.
I will speak with Ken and Stephen (and probably Arnie) this weekend regarding how to set this all up and how many people it will take to run the timing. Stay tuned and please consider working at least part of one or both days, please!
Thanks!

Tom,
I'm hoping that I can be there to support the Soap Box Derby.
Sorry that I can't comit just yet.
One thing to consider regarding setup, the announcer and person doing the scoring must be able to see the large displays at the end of the course.
At the Springs event they just read the displays and enter the times.

I really could use three or four people each day. I have just enough people right now but if someone needs to go to the bathroom, the whole thing goes in the toilet, so to speak. Honestly, it would be nice to have breaks for everyone who is working. Right now, it's a little tight. If you are able to show up for a couple of hours in the middle or end of either day in Littleton, please let me know. The work is easy and not complicated. It will make it a lot easier for everyone.
Thanks for your consideration!

One more note. Did anybody happen to pick up a black Nalgene water bottle from near the starting line Sunday afternoon? I left mine sitting on the sidewalk while I was helping with tearing down the course, and somebody had taken it by the time I was finished and went to go pick it up.

I'll get with Steve and Christie. We were the last ones off the site (plus Lindsey, but he was at the bottom of the hill.)
