What are the requirements on having the battery in the trunk if that's the stock location? (besides having it bolted down)

Factory stock location of the battery is in the trunk behind the seats. Does it have to be in some kind of enclosure? Does the battery need to have a venting system (not sure of the proper term)?

If the trunk (or wherever) is the stock location for the battery, then it's legal in stock class. It must also have a stock/OEM or other "suitable" aftermarket tiedown whose intended and sole purpose it to act as a battery tiedown (no bungie cord, duct tape, coat hanger wire or superchargers). I didn't have time to look in the rulebook to be completely accurate, but special container/venting requirements usually apply when the batery is moved (legally) from its stock location to another location, especially when that location is inside the pasenger compartment.

15) Any wet-cell battery moved from the manufacturer’s original
location shall be in a non-conductive marine-type container or
equivalent, and the hot terminal shall be insulated. All batteries
(on-board power supplies) shall be attached securely to the
frame or chassis structure independent of the marine-type
container. NOTE: This will allow the use of gel cell or dry
cell (AGM) batteries without a non-conductive marine-type
container where applicable.

It doesn't matter if it is in the trunk or in the car; you gotta have a marine container (the Air Force kind don't work). :D

Typically, the only trunk mounted batteries from a manufacturer are AGM batteries, or have external venting such as a vent hose. Anything modern does not use a wet cell in the passenger compartment or trunk, so the marine type box on an OEM trunk mounted battery should not be required.

As a Miata driver (battery in trunk) I should have read the first post instead of glancing at it :o I thought he was talking of moving the battery to the trunk from the stock location. Pardon me while I crawl in the trunk to keep my battery warm.
