Just thought I'd say some kudos publicly:
I was initially *highly* resistant to the change to the forum from the mailing list, but thought I'd keep my yap shut and see how it went.
Having played with the forum for a week or two now, I'm enjoying the change, and have adjusted the ol' routine accordingly. the "New Post" bit that Jeff L. posted is key.
Would recommend keeping to the current number of forums, if not slightly fewer, just for the sake of not having to check a zillion forums for new posts, but beyond that, good job, Dale, Kevin, and anybody else behind the switch();

Now try the forum and thread subscriptions for instant notification!

I agree, and it looks to be a great success ... over 900 posts already.
It sounds like you're using the "New Posts" button from within each forum ...I just use it at the main page and it gives new posts from all the forums. I never go to each forum individually anymore.

There are way more posts than emails so far, but I'm better able to keep up with the discussions. I like the change.
I have noticed that older threads have disappeared from the forums--is there some sort of auto-archiving taking place? Not sure if that is such a good idea. One of the threads that disappeared (for me at least) is the one on the Evolution schools.

That's just the default thread age display - depending on the forum, threads older than a certain age don't get displayed by default. They're still there, though - just change the display options at the bottom of any forum to see older threads (specifically, the "From the" option can be changed to any value you want).

The default view is set to show the last week's worth of posts. You can change your personal settings in the User CP, Edit options, under the heading "default thread cutoff age".
You can also temporarily change them at the bottom of each of the page when you are at the main forum page, by setting the display options.

Maybe the default should be 2 weeks or maybe even 30 days?
