View Full Version : Weather and Winter Event #3

I was just checking the 10 day weather forecast for the springs and noticed that there is a 40% chance of snow on both the Friday and Saturday before the Sunday autocross (which will hopefully be my first). I'm new to this whole autocross business, so I was wondering what the plan would be if this predicted snow actually materializes and puts a measurable amount of snow down. Just running with my snow tires and trying to keep the Miata pointy end forward sounds fun, but I realize that since every car would throw snow around and polish the course surface it would be virtually impossible to have an even competition. Would the event be canceled then?

The course conditions always change during the day (pavement gets warmer, or cleaner, or rain comes in, etc), so that's not an issue.

However, if the weather is too miserable to expect volunteers to work during the day, or the conditions are unsafe, then we do sometimes cancel events.

A 7 day forecast is a long way off, so we'll likely just see how things go.

And welcome!

Ok. That's good to know. I know that the extended forcasts are almost pure speculation, so this was mostly a hypothetical question. So out of curiosity, have you guys ever run an event with snow on the pavement?

Oh, and thanks for the welcome!

Not in the 5 years that I've been doing it.

However, I had heard some talk of the good ol' days ...

Last "snow-cross' I remember is Stapleton Lot #4 - back in the day!! I believe Dale was there, but I can't remember whom else might have showed up!!! :D

I think right now there is a possibility, however small, that the January 14th event will be postponed or canceled. If it is, there will be a notice on the rmsolo homepage and emails will be sent to all the registered entrants. Stay tuned for more.

Is there an open class for the college's snow removal equipment?

Maybe SNO for stock plows, and SNO_VIII for equipment with eight-wheel drive and chains. :D

I'm ready, studs all around on the Porsche.

And then here's the latest for the springs on the NOAA site:

Sunday: A 40 percent chance of snow. Partly cloudy, with a high near 17. Blustery, with a north northeast wind between 15 and 20 mph.

That 15 to 20 mph wind ought to be pleasant :D

Just so you know how cold it's gonna feel. Dress warm!

What fun! If the snow, wind, and cold don't cancel the autox, I guess I had better practice heel toe shifting in winter boots. I also am guessing that 20 degrees is somewhat outside of the designed operating temperatures for the stock sized Kumho VictoRacers I borrowed from Geremy. All in all Sunday looks like an ideal introduction to autocross.

Well. It looks like we aren't running the 14th, so hopefully this event can be rescheduled to a day with decent weather.

Given the regularity of our recent weather events, it'd have to be mid-week :D
